John W. Thompson & Son are Master Hand Engravers, with John accumulating over 50 years experience. But the art of engraving has forever been in their family – their ancestor was the famed 18th century hand engraver William Hogarth.
John W. Thompson completed a five-year apprenticeship with Messrs William Day (Engravers) Ltd at the Angel, Islington, London, in the 1960s. He was the last apprentice in his craft to be taken on anywhere in the United Kingdom. Afterwards John undertook further training at the Central School of Arts and Crafts as well as the London School of Print.
Starting his business in Sydney, Australia over 15 years ago; John’s son Peter has been working alongside him learning the traditional skills of a craftsman. Both father and son are passionate about their craft.
